Gateway to Annwn Freebie

Mystery Freight

When I first suggested doing a train on the Celtic Underworld, Tir na n-Og, Jessica was all for it except the Gaelic was a little troublesome. So we changed it to Gateway to Annwn, going with the Welsh translation, which is a little better.

At least one of the designers questioned it and I said "We're bloody Americans, what the heck do we know?" I figure 90% of the viewing public wouldn't know the difference and most of the rest wouldn't care as long as they were getting a free kit out of the deal.

To quote an external source: "According to Welsh mythology the Land of the Dead – or Annwn: Celtic Underworld – was ruled over by Gwynn ap Nudd. He escorted the souls of the dead there, and led a pack of supernatural hounds."

Anyway, since I got Jess to agree, I was quick to pick on my favorite parts of the legends to go with - that of the Wild Hunt. So while everyone else was struggling with the Welsh, I blythfully went off looking for Cŵn Annwn.

In Welsh mythology and folklore, Cŵn Annwn ("hounds of Annwn") were the spectral hounds of Annwn, the otherworld of Welsh myth. They were associated with a form of the Wild Hunt, presided over by Gwynn ap Nudd (rather than Arawn, king of Annwn in the First Branch of the Mabinogi). Christians came to dub these mythical creatures as "The Hounds of Hell" or "Dogs of Hell" and theorised they were therefore owned by Satan. However, the Annwn of medieval Welsh tradition is an otherworldly paradise and not a hell or abode of dead souls.

I do have to say, despite the rather esoteric subject matter, everyone on this train really stepped up to the plate and there are just some fabulous kits out there, so make sure you ride the rails and get them all. :)

Anyway, I'm not going to burden you futher with history behind all of this. I did throw some items into the kit (The Book of Kells for example) which are complete out of synch with the legends, but hey...consider it artistic license. You want your freebie, so let's get on with it, shall we?

Remember that by downloading this kit, you are agreeing to abide by my terms of use which state in part that that you cannot redistribute, rebroadcast, resale, or claim my graphics as your own.
