Transverse myelitis is a neurological condition in which the spinal cord is inflamed. The inflammation damages nerve fibers, and causes them to lose their myelin coating leading to decreased electrical conductivity in the central nervous system. Transverse implies that the inflammation extends across the entire width of the spinal cord.

There are disturbances in sensory nerves and motor nerves and dysfunction of the autonomic nervous system at the level of the lesion or below. Therefore, the signs and symptoms depend on the area of spine involved and may include weakness of the limbs, loss of sensation, impared function of the bladder and bowel, respitory distress, high blood pressure and paralysis.

The DBTL Parkinson's Awareness train has left the station!

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a long-term degenerative disorder of the central nervous system that mainly affects the motor system. The symptoms generally come on slowly over time. Early in the disease, the most obvious are shaking, rigidity, slowness of movement, and difficulty with walking. Thinking and behavioral problems may also occur. Dementia becomes common in the advanced stages of the disease. Depression and anxiety are also common occurring in more than a third of people with PD. Other symptoms include sensory, sleep, and emotional problems. The main motor symptoms are collectively called "parkinsonism", or a "parkinsonian syndrome".

Causes of the disease are unknown, but it is believed to involve both genetic and environmental factors. There is no cure, and there are treatments, they are not generally effective over long term use.

The skin normally forms a protective barrier between the body and its surrounding environment. Infants with harlequin ichthyosis often experience an excessive loss of fluids (dehydration) and develop life-threatening infections in the first few weeks of life. It used to be very rare for affected infants to survive the newborn period. Have a heart on the Sturge-Weber Syndrome Awareness Blog Train

Sturge-Weber syndrome (SWS) is a neurological disorder marked by a distinctive port-wine stain on the forehead, scalp, or around the eye. This stain is a birthmark caused by an overabundance of capillaries near the surface of the skin. Blood vessels on the same side of the brain as the stain may also be affected causing varying degrees of glaucoma and/or seizure disorder.

One or more of the following symptoms may result: seizures, developmental delays, glaucoma, paralysis, migraines, ischemic stroke, tissue overgrowth, endocrine issues, organ irregularities, partial loss of visual field.

In 2013, the GNAQ gene mutation responsible for Sturge-Weber syndrome was discovered. Researchers now understand the cause of both Sturge-Weber syndrome and Port Wine birthmarks, and are investigating the optimal studies for treatments.
