New in Shops: Erin Go Braless

Erin Go Braless

St. Patrick's Day as it is now celebrated in America began in part as a show of political solidarity for the "Big Green Voting Machine" that were the numerous Irish immigrants who arrived in America following the Great Potato Famine in 1845. While it still remains a celebration of Irish Heritage, by the time I got into High School most people had forgotten the reasons why, and were only interested in the parades.

Parades there still are - New York and Boston being the two main cities for this, but the celebration has spread. Ireland herself, did not promote St. Patrick's Day as a cultural holiday until the late 1990's. Prior to then it was a religious feast day and all the pubs were closed!
